Lencois Maranhenses

The Lencois Maranhenses with its famous white sands is located in the northeast of Brazil in the state of Maranhão, near the town of Barreirinas.

Lencois Maranenses is such a unique place that it surprises even the Brazilians themselves. 1000 square kilometers of clean white sand with many fresh lakes. The lakes share dunes up to 40 meters high. And at the same time, which is especially surprising for the residents of the former "scoop" - it is clean, there is not a single plastic bottle.

In many ways the park Lencois Maranenses is similar to the desert, but here there is more than 300 times more precipitation than in the same Sahara. During the rainy season, water gathers between the barkhans and lakes with the purest blue-green water appear.

"Sheets of Maranhana" - this is how locals call the white sands of Lencois Maranhenses for their beauty. Lencois Maranjenses though looks like a desert, however it is not lifeless sands. During the rainy season birds come here, and in the lakes there are shrimp and fish, which is used by the inhabitants of the nearby villages.

There is vegetation here. When the moisture is enough, mangroves up to 12 meters are literally alive here. These thickets are a haven of giant crabs, golden hares, caimans and deer.

The most important mystery of Lencois Maranenses is where all of her creatures go and where she comes again. On this account, there are many versions, but scientists have not reached a consensus yet. The most popular hypothesis is that caviar of local fish and crab can easily persist for several months while there is no necessary humidity.
